Your Complete 2026 Guide
Published by TrustedCarers.ie — Ireland’s trusted marketplace for verified home carers
If you are caring for an elderly parent, a family member with a disability, or a loved one with a serious illness, you may be entitled to significant financial support from the Irish government. Yet many family carers across Ireland miss out simply because they don’t know what’s available or how to apply.
At TrustedCarers.ie, we work every day with carers and families around Ireland. We know that caring is demanding, often unpaid work — and making sure you claim every entitlement you’re due matters. This guide covers the two most important financial supports for carers: Carer’s Allowance and the Carer’s Support Grant, with all the latest 2026 rates and rules in one place.
What Is Carer’s Allowance?
Carer’s Allowance is a weekly social welfare payment from the Department of Social Protection, paid to people on lower incomes who are providing full-time care for someone who needs it because of age, illness, or disability.
It is means-tested, meaning your income and assets are assessed to determine whether you qualify and at what rate. It is not the same as Carer’s Benefit — more on that distinction below.
Carer’s Allowance recognises the vital role that family carers play in Irish society. Thousands of people across Dublin, Cork, Limerick, Galway, Waterford and every county in Ireland provide this care daily, often at significant personal cost to their own careers and finances.
Carer’s Allowance Rates 2026
The weekly rates increased from January 2026:
| Situation | Weekly Rate |
|---|---|
| Under 66 years old | ~€248 |
| Aged 66 or over | ~€286 |
| Caring for more than one person | +50% extra on top of your standard rate |
If you have dependent children, you may also receive an Increase for a Qualified Child:
- Child under 12: €58 per week (full rate) / €29 (half rate)
- Child aged 12 or over: €78 per week (full rate) / €39 (half rate)
Note: Always verify the exact current weekly rate at citizensinformation.ie or mywelfare.ie, as rates can update mid-year.
Who Qualifies for Carer’s Allowance?
To qualify, you must:
- Be aged 16 or over
- Live in Ireland
- Be providing full-time care and attention (at least 35 hours per week)
- Not work, study, or train outside the home for more than 18.5 hours per week
- Pass a means test (see below)
The person you are caring for must be:
- Aged 16 or over and need full-time care and attention for at least 12 months, OR
- Under 16 and in receipt of Domiciliary Care Allowance
Full-time care means the person requires constant supervision to prevent endangering themselves, or needs frequent help throughout the day with personal tasks such as dressing, washing, eating, mobility, or taking medication.
The Means Test: What’s Assessed in 2026
Carer’s Allowance is means-tested, but the rules became significantly more generous from July 2026 under Budget 2026 measures.
Income disregard (from 2 July 2026):
- Single carer: the first €1,000 per week of assessable income is ignored
- Couple: the first €2,000 per week of combined income is ignored
This is a substantial increase from the previous limits (€625/€1,250), meaning many more people now qualify.
Savings and assets:
- The first €50,000 of savings or assets (excluding your main home) is ignored
- Amounts above this are assessed on a sliding scale
- Your family home is only assessed if you receive rental income from it
What is not counted:
- Social welfare payments from the Department of Social Protection
- Child maintenance payments (removed from assessment since June 2024)
- Pension contributions, travel costs, union dues — these can reduce your assessed means slightly
If your means are above the qualifying threshold, you may still receive a reduced rate of Carer’s Allowance rather than nothing at all.
Can You Work and Still Receive Carer’s Allowance?
Yes — but with limits. You can work, study, or train for up to 18.5 hours per week outside the home. While you are away, you must have suitable care cover arranged for the person you care for.
If you earn above the weekly income disregard, your payment will be reduced on a sliding scale rather than stopped entirely.
Half-Rate Carer’s Allowance
If you are already receiving another social welfare payment (such as a State Pension, One-Parent Family Payment, or Disability Allowance) and you also provide full-time care to someone, you may qualify for half-rate Carer’s Allowance in addition to your existing payment.
You keep your full primary payment and receive 50% of the Carer’s Allowance rate on top. You are also entitled to the annual Carer’s Support Grant and a Free Travel Pass.
Carer’s Benefit: What’s the Difference?
Carer’s Benefit is a separate payment for people who leave employment or reduce their hours to provide full-time care. Unlike Carer’s Allowance, it is not means-tested — instead, it is based on your PRSI contribution record.
Key facts for 2026:
- Payable for up to 2 years (can be split into separate periods)
- You must have at least 156 PRSI contributions paid since starting work
- Extended to self-employed people from January 2025 — an important change for many carers
- Income limit from July 2026: maximum €1,000 per week after tax while receiving Carer’s Benefit
- The 18.5-hour work limit also applies
Carer’s Benefit is a good option if you have a strong PRSI record and need to step back from work temporarily to take on a caring role.
The Carer’s Support Grant: €2,000 Tax-Free Every June
The Carer’s Support Grant (previously known as the Respite Care Grant) is an annual lump-sum payment of €2,000, paid on the first Thursday in June each year.
In 2026, it was paid on Thursday, 4 June 2026.
Key facts:
- Amount: €2,000 per person cared for — if you care for two people, you receive €4,000
- Tax status: Fully exempt from income tax, PRSI, and USC — you do not need to declare it to Revenue
- Automatic payment: If you are receiving Carer’s Allowance, Carer’s Benefit, or Domiciliary Care Allowance, you receive it automatically — no application needed
- No restrictions on spending: You can use it for anything you wish — a holiday, home adaptations, medical equipment, respite care, or to top up your care hours
Can I get the grant if I’m not on Carer’s Allowance?
Yes. The Carer’s Support Grant is not means-tested and is available to carers who don’t qualify for the weekly allowance, provided you:
- Are aged 16 or over and ordinarily resident in Ireland
- Have been caring full-time for at least 6 months (including the first Thursday in June)
- Are not working, studying, or training for more than 18.5 hours per week
- Live with the person you care for, or are contactable by them quickly (e.g. by phone or alarm)
You can apply for the grant up to 31 December of the following year — so it’s not too late if you missed the June payment.
Using Your Carer’s Support Grant for Home Care
Many carers use the annual €2,000 grant to fund additional care support — particularly during the summer months when regular routines change, or to give themselves a much-needed break.
TrustedCarers.ie is a practical way to put that grant to work. Our platform connects families across Ireland with verified, experienced home carers who can provide:
- Respite care — giving family carers a break
- Personal care and companionship for older people
- Dementia and Alzheimer’s care
- Post-hospital recovery support
- Flexible home help — a few hours per week, or full-time
You can browse carer profiles, read reviews, and connect directly with carers in your area. Whether you’re in Dublin, Cork, Galway, Limerick, Waterford or anywhere in between, TrustedCarers.ie makes finding the right person straightforward.
Additional Benefits for Carers
If you are in receipt of Carer’s Allowance, you may also be entitled to:
| Benefit | Detail |

| Household Benefits Package | Contribution towards electricity, gas, and a free TV licence |
| Fuel Allowance | Seasonal payment to help with heating costs (subject to a separate means test) |
| Medical Card | Access to GP visits and medications — worth checking eligibility |
| Home Carer Tax Credit | Worth €1,950 in 2026 for a spouse/partner who stays home to care — claimed through Revenue |

Online: You can also apply faster through mywelfare.ie — this is the recommended route and can speed up processing.
Processing time: Allow approximately 12 weeks. Apply as early as possible, and send your form even if you’re still gathering some documents — you can follow up with additional information.
Tip: Photocopy everything before posting, and keep a record of when you submitted. Backdating a successful claim is difficult, so don’t delay.
